Los Angeles [ Santa Monica: corner of Wilshire Blvd and Ocean Ave ]
Fall 2008
This spa and fitness center, located in Santa Monica, emphasizes one’s approach into the structure by utilizing and unifying the pertinent street and landscape markers. Located in the epicenter of the coastal city, it can be found on the Northwest corner of Wilshire and Ocean Ave, a mere hundred meters from the Pacific Ocean. With Wilshire being the bloodline that it is, taking its passengers from downtown LA to the water’s edge, it seemed extremely important to accentuate this fact into the center’s design. The integration of the city’s layout into the design is achieved by incorporating a boardwalk approach to create a higher level of interaction with the program. This design promotes an instrumental link between public spaces, culminating at the crossroads of Wilshire and 3rd St Promenade.
For the first time in my student career the design was taken a step further in an attempt to reach a higher level of completion. We took the scale down from that of the building to that of the specific details that comprised the whole. We were asked to make a complete set of Construction Documents for the overall design, tying the abstract concepts in with the actual make-up of the building.
